Frog Fishing

Frog fishing uses hollow-bodied topwater frogs or popping frogs to target bass in heavy surface vegetation — lily pads, hydrilla mats, duckweed, cattails, floating grass, and other cover that would snag any other lure type. The hollow body design allows the frog to ride over and through matted vegetation without snagging, while the upturned hooks are pressed against the body until a fish compresses the soft plastic on the strike, exposing the hook points. Frog fishing tackle is heavy and specialized: 7'2" to 7'6" heavy-power rods with fast tips for casting accuracy and backbone for pulling fish through thick vegetation, paired with high-speed (7.1:1 or faster) baitcasting reels spooled with 50-65 pound braided line. Fluorocarbon and monofilament are never used — braid is mandatory because you're pulling bass through dense vegetation that would break lighter lines. The biggest challenge in frog fishing is timing the hookset. Bass explode on frogs from below, often launching through the mat with the frog in their mouth, and the natural instinct is to set the hook immediately. However, the frog must first be compressed into the fish's jaw for the hooks to penetrate — setting too early pulls the frog out of the fish's mouth. The proper technique is to point the rod tip at the fish, reel tight until you feel weight, then set hard with a sweeping motion. Frog fishing is most productive during summer and early fall when vegetation is at its thickest, water temperatures are 70°F+, and bass use matted vegetation as ambush cover.
