Bed Fishing (Sight Fishing Beds)

Category: Techniques

Bed fishing is a specialized form of sight fishing that targets bass actively guarding spawning beds (nests) in shallow water during the spring spawn. Male bass sweep circular beds 18-36 inches in diameter on hard-bottom substrates (gravel, sand, clay, shell) in protected areas with minimal current, typically at depths of 1-6 feet. The beds appear as light-colored circles on the lake bottom, visible with polarized sunglasses in clear water. Bed fishing is arguably the most technically demanding form of bass fishing because spawning bass are not feeding — they strike lures to defend the nest from perceived threats to their eggs and fry. The angler must identify the bed, position the boat at distance (10-20+ feet to avoid spooking the fish), and repeatedly cast a bait into or near the bed until the bass's protective instinct overwhelms its caution and it picks up the lure. This process can take minutes or hours for a single fish. Common bed fishing baits include white or chartreuse creature baits (high-visibility colors that the angler can track), small jigs, and tubes — worked slowly on or near the bed with long pauses. Heavier baits that sit on the bed without drifting away are preferred. Ethical considerations surround bed fishing: removing a guarding male from the nest leaves eggs and fry vulnerable to predation by bluegill and other nest raiders. Many tournament organizations have debated restricting bed fishing, and some anglers voluntarily practice catch-and-release ethics during the spawn, particularly for female bass.

How AI CoAngler Helps

AI CoAngler tracks water temperature progression to predict spawn timing on your specific lake, identifies the temperature window (62-72°F) when beds are most active, and uses satellite imagery to highlight the protected shallow coves and pockets where spawning activity concentrates. The app provides an ethical fishing reminder during peak spawn periods.
